MUNCASTER CASTLE Location: OS ref SD103965 Sheet 96. In the SW of the County near the coastal village of Ravenglass.
|
Muncaster Castle lies to the East of Ravenglass village and above the River Esk, this ancient castle has remained in the same family, the Penningtons, since1208. The oldest part of the castle as it stands is the pele tower of circa 1325. Much building work has been carried out over the centuries, some to the design of the well known architect Anthony Salvin.
The castle has not suffered in the way most in the county have: it was too far off the beaten track for the Scots to consider, and the Civil War didn't bother with it either. It has something of a reputation for being haunted. A popular tourist attraction, especially in June/July when the famous rhododendrons are in bloom. There is also a bird sanctuary.
