The Pottery

Previously a barn, there is now a spacious work-shop equipped with a wheel, kilns and other potting necessities. Visitors are welcome to come in and talk when Peter Lascelles, the potter, is there (which he usually is).

His pots are made on the wheel. The various kinds of glaze and decoration he uses are shown in the illustrations. Decoration is applied at the half dry (leather hard) stage. The pots are then fired to 1100C (biscuit firing). They are then glazed and fired once more, this time to 1290C (stoneware). Most of his pots are put on sale in the shop but he also does commissions and exhibitions in galleries from time to time. Since he works by himself, there is a limit to what can be produced and the stock in the shop can shrink somewhat at busy times of year.

His pots are made to be used , varying in size from mugs to bread-crocks. Each spring he makes several kiln-loads of flower pots but these have usually sold by early summer. He doesnt believe in artificial Innovation. His pots are tranquil, elegant and easy to live with but with that inner glow which characterises all first class pottery. Most of the pots sell at between £5 and £50 but individual items may cost up to £150 depending on size and how long it took to apply the decoration.
