The West Coast Mainline runs through CUMBRIA on its way from LONDON (EUSTON) to GLASGOW (CENTRAL) in SCOTLAND. Trains stop at OXENHOLME (KENDAL), PENRITH & CARLISLE.

All Intercity Trains are air-conditioned and most provide a buffet and restaurant service. They are also probably the most comfortable way to travel.

The operation of this service has recently passed to the Virgin Group which plans to further reduce journey times, update rolling stock and introduce new luxuries normally found in their airliners such as seat back TV.

The Town pages give the address and telephone numbers of Tourist Information Centres. These should always be your first port of call when visiting a town if you are not sure of what to do for the day and want a few ideas. In addition these centres can book you into hotels or bed and breakfast accommodation. They are always willing to answer your questions and help in any way they can.

When telephoning from outside the UK remember to prefix the number with the correct code from your country and do not dial the first 0 of the area code (such as 0171 for central London).

MONEY: All International credit cards are accepted throughout the country. Banks generally offer better exchange rates and lower commission than hotels and restaurants - please remember to have your passport with you for identification.
